Qualicum Beach Coastal

Set along a high cliff in Qualicum Beach, this project reveals itself gradually. From the road, the architecture created by the esteemed Hoedemaker Pfieffer appears low and composed within its coastal setting, with restrained architectural landscaping guiding the transition from neighbourhood to home. Ornamental grasslands move across subtly bermed ground, while Garry oaks, Japanese maples, and freestanding walls create a measured sequence of enclosure and release. The approach is not designed around a single view. Instead, it unfolds in layers, drawing attention to texture, movement, and changing coastal light before the horizon comes fully into view. A coastal home shaped by arrival, anticipation, and a deep sense of belonging to place.

The site has notable natural qualities: expansive ocean views, mature trees to preserve, and inviting places to gather and connect with nature.
The moodboard draws on waterfront precedents to define the intent for architectural landscaping, spatial design, and materiality.
Multiple sketches explore the site’s possibilities, gradually revealing a clear direction for movement.
Designed for family and guests, the courtyard balances gathering and reflection, with a pool, hot tub, outdoor kitchen and lounging areas framed by planted screening for privacy and carefully composed views.
At its centre, a sculptural gongshi stone bench, carved from Vancouver Island marble, offers a grounded place to sit among native grasslands and West Coast planting.
Outdoor spaces such as the fire pit and rooftop sun deck are placed lightly within the meadow shaped for both conversation and pause to take in the view.
